The vehicle grew from prototypes completed in the late 1960s and entered production around 1970. Nearly a thousand were delivered by 1974 with welded aluminium armour, water-jet propulsion, and a heavy machine gun. Its ability to move Marines from ship to shore made it central to amphibious assault, while the original proposal for a 20 mm cannon shows that firepower was reduced before service. The surviving fleet's age demonstrates how a durable design becomes a procurement liability when replacement is delayed for decades.
