Luleå-class frigates and Baltic sea control

The planned Luleå-class frigates would provide the endurance, anti-submarine sensors, and air-defence capacity needed to protect Baltic convoys with NATO support.

Notes

Sweden had considered a second generation of Visby corvettes in 2021, but the changed strategic setting brought the Luleå frigate program to the fore. The planned ships have a complement of about 125, a top speed near 27 knots, and combined diesel-and-diesel propulsion. Their proposed combat fit includes anti-submarine sonar, radar, Aster 30 and extended-range CAMM missiles, 57 mm and 40 mm Bofors guns, plus a hangar for a helicopter and UAV. A Luleå would need to absorb damage, remain on station, and protect movement across the Baltic. NATO membership gives Sweden partners around the sea and makes those waters a major resupply route for the Baltic states, Poland, and Finland. Convoy protection is therefore central to the class's planned local sea-control mission. Type 31 and Alfa 4000 designs are mentioned among the other procurement options. The discussion anticipates four Luleå ships, while questioning whether that number will meet the demand for sustained convoy protection.
