Lord Nelson and Agamemnon combined four 12-inch guns with ten 9.2-inch weapons, extensive lighter armament, and heavy protection. They were the culmination of the established British mixed-battery sequence. Their small two-ship class also allowed the navy to advance a powerful design while HMS Dreadnought tested a more radical direction. If the all-big-gun experiment had disappointed, the Royal Navy would still have possessed two of the world's most formidable conventional battleships.
