The logistics of leaving the 12-inch gun standard

Britain's move to 13.5-inch guns required replacing a worldwide system built around familiar 12-inch ammunition, factories, stores, and handling knowledge.

Notes

The familiar 12-inch gun carries a system-wide logistical and industrial advantage. Pre-dreadnought ammunition stockpiles already exist at bases around the world, backed by established factories, stores, and handling knowledge. Moving to a larger shell means changing an entire supply network as well as fitting a new weapon. Britain considered 14-inch guns but judged the 1.5-inch step to 13.5 inches easier to support than an immediate two-inch jump. Ammunition standardization and industrial infrastructure therefore constrain an otherwise attractive increase in firepower.
