LMS Fury and experimental high-pressure steam

The experimental locomotive Fury opens a short discussion of high-pressure steam, streamlining tests, cheap coal, diesel adoption, and electrification.

Notes

LMS Fury was an experimental high-pressure locomotive associated with Henry Fowler. Images of streamlining tests show the trial-and-error work behind later locomotive forms. The discussion then turns to why Britain retained steam for so long: abundant cheap coal reduced the immediate incentive to adopt diesel. Early electrification also meant that diesel often entered as a replacement on routes that had not been electrified rather than as the only successor to steam.
