Why did HMS Lion have a turret positioned amidships between other structures?
Short answerMachinery arrangement, broadside arcs, and the hull form needed for speed made the amidships position a workable compromise.
NotesA viewer asks why one of Lion's gun turrets appears isolated in the middle of the ship. The position reflects the machinery and funnel layout as well as the desire to preserve a useful broadside. The designers did not prioritize stern fire in the same way as engagement to either beam or forward sectors. Keeping the turret in that location also allowed the hull to be shaped for the speed expected of a battlecruiser. Weapon placement emerges from compromises among propulsion, arcs of fire, and hydrodynamics.
