The unnamed fifth and sixth Lion-class battleships

Only four familiar Lion-class names had official standing before cancellation; suggestions for the remaining ships remain informed speculation.

Question

Do we know the intended names of the fifth and sixth Lion-class battleships?

Short answer

No official names had been assigned before cancellation; likely candidates can only be inferred from contemporary naming practice and notes.

Notes

The fifth and sixth Lion-class battleships had not received official names when the programme was cancelled. Lion, Temeraire, Thunderer, and Conqueror drew on earlier Royal Navy capital-ship names, making other names from that period plausible candidates. Alex Clarke recalls photographing a naval constructor's private papers in a Welsh local archive, including naming discussions. His notes include Centurion and Audacious, with Marlborough nearby, but Audacious was already associated with a carrier and he recalls Tiger being considered for a following class. These are recollections of informal discussions whose details would need checking against the photographed papers. The diary contained personal observations and naming ideas rather than ship-design material, so it does not establish an approved assignment for either unnamed battleship.
