Liberty ships become the blood vessels of global war

Thousands of adaptable freighters supplied the mass that kept Allied sea lines of communication carrying the materials of war.

Notes

The blood-vessel metaphor places Liberty ships within the maritime arteries of war. Their strategic value came from performing many different transport tasks across the sea lines of communication rather than excelling at one specialized mission. Although the design owed a clear debt to the British Ocean-class order, the resulting Liberty ship was a distinct and capable American production design. Merchant tonnage appears here as operational infrastructure rather than a collection of anonymous cargo hulls.
