Chapter · 32:37-34:47

Cargo flexibility and familiar engines shape the Liberty ship

Self-unloading gear, five cargo holds, and familiar machinery make the ship flexible without competing for scarce turbine capacity.

Notes

Derricks allowed Liberty ships to work ports without dependable shore cranes, despite the extra effort required to manufacture and fit the lifting gear. Five holds accommodated bags, pallets, boxes, crates, and other general cargo, giving the ships broad utility across different supply routes. Triple-expansion engines sacrificed speed but were easier to build, operate, and maintain. They also avoided consuming the turbines urgently needed for destroyers, cruisers, and other warships.
