Chapter · 2:11-3:00

Why the battlecruisers became carriers

The episode shifts from Lexington and Saratoga's battlecruiser origins to what their carrier conversions made possible.

Notes

Lexington and Saratoga had already been considered in their intended battlecruiser form. Their conversion into aircraft carriers raises a separate set of technological and doctrinal questions. Each ship is important enough in its carrier form to warrant its own discussion, although this episode treats them together. Their mixed inheritance may also help explain later US Navy unease with the battlecarrier concept.
