Léopard's escort conversion removed the forward boiler and funnel to make room for fuel and additional accommodation. Top speed fell to 31.5 knots, while range increased to about 4,200 nautical miles at 15 knots and accommodation rose to a maximum of 234 men. Depth-charge rails replaced the unsatisfactory chutes and allowed heavier charges to be carried. Throwers added to the anti-submarine fit. Oerlikons replaced the 4-inch gun and more pom-poms strengthened the medium and light anti-aircraft battery. The reduced topweight made room for Type 291 search radar, adapting the ship more closely to ocean escort work.
