Leitha was about to leave service in 1914 but instead fought Serbian and Romanian forces on the Danube. A direct turret hit during the first occupation of Belgrade killed the turret crew and forced her withdrawal. After repair and rearmament, she became Danube flotilla flagship for renewed operations, including support to Central Powers river crossings. After the war, Leitha and her sister Maros also took part in the anti-communist Monitor Revolt. Her rediscovery and forensic identification decades later preserved a rare early monitor as a Hungarian museum and honorary flagship.
