Six water-tube boilers supplied two geared steam turbines, while four diesel engines contributed to a three-shaft plant capable of 32 knots. Leipzig's quoted range was 3,900 nautical miles at 10 knots, compared with 5,700 nautical miles at 19 knots for Königsberg. Nürnberg also required about 140 more enlisted men than Leipzig. The extra machinery and manpower failed to deliver a persuasive operational improvement over the preceding class.
