Le Triomphant took part in an operation to intercept German merchant ships bound for Norway. The force fought German torpedo boats, but heavy seas probably caused more of her damage than the engagement. Engine problems forced her to stop at Plymouth for repairs. Her presence there allowed Operation Catapult to bring her under British control, followed quickly by transfer to the Free French. She became one of their largest available modern warships, and her wartime modifications included Asdic and British radar fitted in an American yard.
