A modernized Perry is proposed as a way to continue escort work while the LCS concentrated on fast, close-in support for littoral and amphibious operations. The LCS was also asked to perform traditional frigate duties. In the analysis presented here, a design able to do both mission sets robustly would exceed the intended size and cost. Repeated compromises affected both LCS variants without resolving that conflict. The diagnosis is overreach and over-specification, with the same attempt to combine missions recurring in FFG(X).
