A task group would use every suitable defensive layer against incoming missiles. Outer combat air patrols, area-defense and point-defense missiles, electronic warfare, chaff, decoys, guns, and potentially lasers could all contribute to the engagement. Since about the 1960s, NATO has prepared for Soviet attacks involving hundreds of missiles intended to overwhelm a task group. Hypersonic weapons add speed to that established saturation problem while facing the broader defensive system.
