Layered weapons for air, surface, and undersea threats

Standard's secondary anti-ship role, Aspide's development, and the Otomat-MILAS relationship show how the ship's weapons combined complementary and overlapping capabilities.

Notes

The class combined weapons with complementary and sometimes overlapping roles. Standard handled longer-range air defence and could also engage surface ships, while Aspide covered shorter ranges and the three 76 mm mounts added close defensive fire. Otomat provided dedicated anti-ship reach. The Otomat Mark 2 design also became the basis for the MILAS anti-submarine missile. Aspide began as an Italian equivalent to the Sea Sparrow concept and improved after a less successful first generation. Together, these systems allowed one destroyer to respond to air, surface, and undersea threats.
