Layered air defence for Atlantic ASW groups

Keith Speed's programme answers the Backfire bomber threat with Sea Harriers, Sea Dart, Sea Wolf, electronic warfare, and decoys.

Notes

The programme describes air defence in depth around Royal Navy anti-submarine task groups. Soviet Backfire bombers armed with improving air-to-surface missiles require interception at several ranges. Sea Harriers from Hermes and the Invincible class form the fighter layer, with the first frontline squadron already commissioned. Type 42 destroyers and the carriers add medium-range Sea Dart, which was also due for upgrades to remain effective through the end of the century. Type 22 and refitted Leander-class frigates carry Sea Wolf for point defence. Abbey Hill electronic support measures, radar jammers, and decoys provide warning and attempt to disrupt missiles on final approach. Fighters, missiles, and electronic warfare are presented as one protective system.
