The later French armoured cruisers reached roughly 13,600 tons and 159 metres, close to twice Dupuy de Lôme's displacement and almost three times that of the Amiral Charner class. Forty-two boilers and three engines produced a top speed of about twenty-three knots with a 5,100-nautical-mile cruising range. Their armour was also much more substantial, with thick belts, turrets, and conning towers. Contemporary references such as Brassey's Naval Annual sometimes grouped nominally separate designs because their characteristics were so similar. Despite the growth, the battery still used five gun types, so greater size had not eliminated the logistics problem.

Late French designs nearly doubled the displacement of Dupuy de Lôme, gaining speed and protection while retaining an elaborate mixed battery.
