Late-war Hellcat and Helldiver upgrades versus the next generation

A longer Pacific war could bring more powerful Hellcat and Helldiver variants aboard carriers, but the Bearcat and Corsair already competed for attention and production.

Question

Would improved Hellcats and Helldivers have served on US carriers if the Second World War lasted longer?

Short answer

Probably, although the Navy might also move directly toward Bearcat and later Corsair variants rather than expand every interim upgrade.

Notes

The proposed F6F-6 Hellcat and SB2C-6 Helldiver were evolutionary powerplant and propeller upgrades rather than wholly new aircraft. A longer war could have put them into wider carrier service, especially if production preparations were already under way. Planners would also compare the value of those improvements with the Bearcat and later Corsair developments. Against the Zero, even a larger-engine Hellcat would add performance to an aircraft that already held a major combat advantage.
