Laser defenses are expected to begin with limitations that require operational experience to resolve. Guns and short-range missiles must remain available while the new systems mature. Single mounts cost less, are easier to maintain and require smaller magazines. Comparing a modern single mount with an old twin misses the potential of a modern twin using the same improvements in recoil compensation and accuracy. Four modern twin 76 mm mounts are proposed as a way to obtain eight barrels without finding space for eight separate positions. The preference is for overlapping weapons that can continue protecting the fleet after an attack penetrates the outer defenses.

Lasers belong inside layered gun and missile defenses
Early lasers add another defensive layer, while modern twin mounts could multiply firepower without consuming the deck space of extra positions.
