Would British 9.2-inch and French 9.4-inch cruisers force Germany and Italy to change course?
Short answerItaly could answer with existing design experience, while Germany would probably build larger; ordinary 8-inch cruisers would become inadequate against them.
NotesFrench 9.4-inch and British 9.2-inch cruisers would make ordinary 8-inch ships look increasingly under-armed. Italy already possessed designs able to respond, while Germany would likely enlarge its cruisers or lean harder on 11-inch ships. An 8-inch cruiser may have a reasonable chance against another vessel of the same caliber. It cannot exchange fire equally with a rapid 9.2-inch battery whose heavier shells erase much of the smaller weapon's protection margin.
