Large escorts can raise the cost of contesting sea control

A proposed large-escort role is examined through the interwar problem of holding an ocean area with a mixed force.

Notes

The comparison applies interwar British sea-control logic to an American large-escort concept under discussion. In that proposed role, a ship with deep missile capacity and substantial power generation for directed-energy weapons would help a formation remain in a contested area. The suggested mechanism is to increase the resources an opponent would need to commit against it. An adversary could then face a choice about which of several formations to attack. The interpretation remains conditional on how the ship is built and employed.
