Langsdorff turns away from an early River Plate strike

Langsdorff revisited African trade routes instead of exploiting his temporary lead toward the River Plate, giving British forces more time to assemble.

Notes

Graf Spee's faster return from the Indian Ocean opened a temporary lead over the British search. Forces H and K were still far south, while Harwood had not yet completed his concentration near the River Plate. A direct move west might therefore have reached the dense trade routes before the three British cruisers assembled. Langsdorff instead turned east toward African shipping for another attack. The alternative remains counterfactual rather than certain, but the chosen detour spent time, resources, and concealment while the British concentration matured.
