Langsdorff trades timing for extra prizes

Extra merchant prizes cost Langsdorff time and concealment while Harwood judged that Graf Spee still needed a major success before returning home.

Notes

The late attacks around Doric Star and during the Atlantic crossing disclosed Graf Spee's movements and delayed her arrival off the River Plate. Several explanations may fit: orders to preserve the ship, humane treatment of merchant crews, a desire to demonstrate impunity, or a false sense of security after evading the Royal Navy for so long. Langsdorff's private psychology cannot be recovered with certainty, and easy hindsight would conceal the limits of his information. Even so, the additional attacks spent resources and gave Harwood more time to concentrate his cruisers. Harwood also judged that Langsdorff needed further successes to justify the expedition and return home with sufficient credit, making the rich River Plate routes a plausible destination. An earlier arrival might have found major merchant concentrations and a weaker or dispersed cruiser force, but that outcome remains counterfactual.
