Langsdorff and Harwood fight for different victories

Langsdorff needs to escape with Graf Spee still able to raid merchant shipping, while Harwood seeks the raider's destruction.

Notes

For Hans Langsdorff, victory means keeping Admiral Graf Spee afloat and operational. Escape must leave it able to attack more merchant shipping, so merely avoiding sinking would not meet the whole objective. Henry Harwood approaches the fight with the aim of destroying Graf Spee. Those different objectives shape the risks each commander is prepared to accept.
