Langley's thousand questions as a model of naval innovation

Captain Joseph Reeves used an open list of operational questions aboard USS Langley to draw practical carrier innovations from the entire crew.

Notes

USS Langley began as the collier Jupiter, then became a platform on which sailors had to develop carrier operations. Deck handling, hangar use and the launch-and-recovery cycle all required practical answers. Reeves made his 'thousand questions' visible to the crew and invited anyone with an answer to contribute. The method gave leadership access to experience and ideas throughout the ship.
