Langley's open hangar reflects a Pacific-centered outlook

Langley's open-sided hangar helps reveal how strongly early American carrier thinking was oriented toward Pacific operations rather than North Atlantic weather.

Notes

Langley's physical arrangement reflects the US Navy's westward strategic outlook. Although the ship was converted at Norfolk, her open-sided hangar would expose fragile early aircraft to harsher Atlantic conditions. That tradeoff makes more sense within the vast spaces and different operating assumptions of the Pacific. The design shows how geography shaped even an experimental carrier's practical compromises.
