The 1937 cruiser was the sixth vessel to carry the name La Argentina, while the current ship is the seventh. One earlier namesake was a nineteenth-century corvette ordered as an Ottoman training vessel. After that purchase was cancelled and construction suspended, an Argentine officer inspected the ship and recommended it for the Escuela Naval Militar. Argentine representatives then contracted with the STT shipyard in Trieste to acquire the incomplete vessel. An abandoned Ottoman order built in Austria-Hungary thus became an Argentine cadet ship, a compact example of transnational naval procurement.
