La Argentina and the impossibility of a perfect treaty cruiser

La Argentina illustrates why an attractive cruiser alternative could still carry compromises imposed by the wider treaty system.

Notes

One flawed cruiser cannot be judged against an imaginary perfect alternative because every design trades capability against weight, cost, and role. The Argentine cruiser La Argentina offers an intriguing development of the British Arethusa pattern, combining triple turrets with firepower comparable to a later Crown Colony-class cruiser. That made it appealing rather than flawless. Even navies that exceeded, evaded, or ignored the written limits still had to remain close enough to a nominal 10,000-ton cruiser to preserve diplomatic plausibility. The treaty system constrained the whole international design environment, including ships that did not honestly meet its written limits.
