Aircraft carriers were critical off Korea because nearby flight decks kept air support within practical reach of troops ashore. Destroyers such as Huron screened the carriers, provided shore bombardment, and operated as parts of a combined force. Postwar refits added Squid mortars and revised gun fits to meet new anti-submarine and air-defence requirements. Haida's preserved three-inch mounting shows the compact, radar-directed, high-rate weapon that older destroyers could gain during that transition.
