Korean War mobilization reaches the reserves and RFA

Britain recalled reserve personnel, acquired additional tankers, improved reserve-fleet readiness, and accelerated anti-submarine and mine-warfare programs as Cold War pressure intensified.

Notes

Britain's NATO commitment translated quickly into Royal Navy manpower and auxiliary measures. Thousands of reserve ratings and hundreds of officers were recalled for eighteen months of service. Tankers being built for Poland and a Nationalist Chinese tanker at Hong Kong were taken into the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, expanding the support fleet alongside combatants. The extra personnel allowed more ships to be commissioned from reserve and the reserve fleet to be held at better readiness. Accelerated anti-submarine and mine-warfare construction shows that mobilization meant reshaping the whole fleet system, not simply sending existing ships to Korea.
