Six water-tube boilers fed four geared steam turbines, while two MAN ten-cylinder diesels supported the propulsion arrangement. Together the machinery produced about 65,000 shaft horsepower, a top speed of 32 knots, and a stated range of 5,700 nautical miles at 19 knots. Those respectable figures sat beside poor turrets and a hull riddled with portholes. At roughly 174 metres long and 7,800 tons full load, the ship combined modern machinery with the proportions and habits of a much older cruiser. The attractive components never formed a convincing whole.

Modern hybrid machinery inside a dated cruiser hull
Steam turbines and cruising diesels produced useful speed and range, yet the hull still looked closer to a 1910 cruiser than a coherent modern design.
