Why the rebuilt Kongos edged toward fast battleships

The Kongo-class label is treated as a spectrum question, with internal subdivision carrying more weight than armor alone in judging the rebuilds.

Notes

Capital ships can be placed on a spectrum from cruiser-hunting battlecruisers through battle-line battlecruisers to fast and conventional battleships. The original Japanese concept expected battlecruisers to occupy enemy heavy ships long enough for the main battle line to win its engagement. For the rebuilt Kongos, improved internal subdivision matters more than added external armor alone. That survivability work moves them closer to fast-battleship territory in this classification, although the boundary remains a judgment rather than a fixed category. Later labels can conceal both the intended role and the accumulated alterations of a ship class.
