Kolkata stealth growth and decade-long delivery

The larger stealth-shaped Kolkata class delivered major capability gains, but each ship spent about a decade between laying down and commissioning.

Notes

Project 15A grew to about 6,800 tons standard and 7,400 tons full load and adopted stealth standards, making the Kolkata class a substantial redesign of the Delhi. Kolkata was laid down in 2003 and commissioned in 2014, Kochi in 2005 and 2015, and Chennai in 2006 and November 2016. The ships therefore took roughly ten to eleven years from laying down to commissioning. Their capability gains made them a worthwhile extension of India's ability to design and build its own destroyers, despite those long schedules. Barak 8 surface-to-air missiles and BrahMos strike weapons were among the systems that strengthened their combat capability.
