Kolkata gun layers and drone-defence economics

Four AK-630 close-in guns anchor an argument for defeating cheap drones with affordable gunfire instead of relying on expensive missiles.

Notes

The Kolkata class carries four AK-630 close-in weapon systems, a fit that opens a discussion of drone-defence economics. Long-range missiles may be justified when a drone threatens a tanker or another target whose loss would have wider consequences, but they are an expensive answer to a small attacker approaching the warship itself. The historical parallel is the use of numerous quick-firing guns against torpedo boats before they entered launching range. Navies that retained 20 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, 57 mm, or 76 mm gun layers have more options against cheap close threats than fleets designed around missiles for nearly everything. An apparently old-fashioned gun fit can therefore remain useful even as lasers begin to enter service.
