Kirov-class cruisers as an offset strategy

The Soviet Kirovs could threaten distant trade and pull NATO forces away from northern bastions, making endurance part of a wider diversion strategy.

Notes

The Kirov class combined striking power and prestige with a deliberate Soviet offset strategy. Soviet planners studied the successes and failures of German surface raiders when considering how to ease pressure on defended northern bastions. A powerful ship operating away from the North Atlantic or northern Pacific would present NATO with a threat it could not safely ignore. The same logic shaped the earlier Sverdlov-class cruisers and the Soviet Indian Ocean force, both intended to create trouble far from the bastions. Every ship, aircraft, or surveillance asset sent after the raider would be unavailable for the main northern contest.
