An aircraft crew can report a submarine contact or a successful attack, but the force following behind still has to judge how much confidence that report deserves. An uncertain contact may not have been a submarine, while a real boat may have survived the apparent kill. A task group should therefore treat an unverified submarine as still alive. Continued caution costs time and attention, but discovering that no hostile boat remains is safer than relaxing the screen around one that does.

Learn why a task group should keep planning against a submarine unless the patrol aircraft's detection and kill assessment are convincing.
