Type 26 begins with a clear purpose: finding and killing submarines before they can attack a task group. Submarines are dangerous because they can approach unseen, yet history also shows that dedicated surface and air ASW forces can destroy them. The escort must protect troop transports, supply ships, and carriers whose combined value far exceeds the frigate's own price. That requirement explains why a first-rate submarine hunter cannot be treated as a cheap platform. Rafted machinery, hull shaping, sensors, and accumulated ASW experience all serve the same specialist mission.
