Japan's iterative route to domestic anti-ship missiles

Mogami's Type 17 missiles sit within a Japanese effort to develop domestic weapons through successive designs while continuing to use and adapt American systems.

Notes

Japan's anti-ship missile capability grew through repeated domestic development. The earlier stage is recalled as Type 88 or SSM-1, associated with work in the 1980s and ideas reaching back into the 1970s. The later Type 12 provides another example of continued development, while Mogami carries eight Type 17 missiles. American systems remain part of the picture through purchases, adaptation, and domestic manufacture.
