Mogami supplies mass in Japan's high-low fleet mix

Japan can field affordable Mogamis in numbers because larger Aegis ships cover the top tier and steady yard work lowers the cost of replacing the rest of the force.

Notes

Japan already has top-tier Aegis destroyers, with larger Aegis ships under construction, and a middle band of other destroyers. Mogami can therefore concentrate on the lower escort tier. More hulls spread the formation, provide mutual support, and keep useful ships available in several places at once. Requiring every escort to match a Maya or Kongo would shrink the fleet through cost. The resulting high-low mix balances combat quality with the number of ships needed for routine deployments and wartime depth. Continuous construction also preserves yard skills and avoids the expense of repeatedly restarting production. Australian and other export interest strengthens that industrial logic by extending the run.
