Indian ASW helicopters and the cost of learning

A possible Merlin fit leads into the doctrine, onboard computing, and industrial learning needed for India to field an independent ASW helicopter capability.

Notes

India operates domestically developed helicopters and Sea King variants. An EH101 or new-build Merlin purchase remains an uncertain possibility. A Merlin may suit an Indian doctrine that gives the helicopter more independence during submarine prosecution, requiring more computing capacity and mission equipment aboard the aircraft itself. In this comparison, Russian practice relies more heavily on several aircraft working together, while American helicopters are independent and capable but remain tied to their ships in some aspects of operation. An indigenous replacement would face the mistakes and compromises of a first domestic generation. A technology can be mature internationally and still be first-generation work for a particular national industry. Designs that look sound on paper can reveal problems as that industry gains experience building and operating them. Licensed production offers one route to learning the manufacturing process and design philosophy before attempting a fully national successor.
