Chapter · 35:59-39:02

Kent-class machinery, speed, and range

The Kent class combined eight boilers, four shafts, and 80,000 shp for roughly 31.5 knots, with range suited to distant station service.

Notes

The Kent class combined a large hull with eight boilers, geared turbines, and four shafts. Most ships made roughly 31.5 knots from 80,000 shp, while reports suggest that Berwick’s Brown-Curtis machinery may have reached 33.5 knots. That higher figure remains uncertain, although Berwick also appears to have used less fuel at 10 knots. The range figures show why endurance at economical speed mattered as much to a station cruiser as headline speed. Crew size varied when a ship served as a flagship, reinforcing the class’s role as both fighting cruiser and command ship.
