Chapter · 36:40-39:59

Kemal Reis and the Ottoman advantage in command

Kemal Reis combined extensive sailing and combat experience with clear delegated authority, in sharp contrast to Grimani's politicized command system.

Notes

Kemal Reis was an experienced sailor and reforming Ottoman naval officer with operations along Spain, Africa, and the Balearic Islands behind him. He had fought Christian knights at sea and worked to improve the navy. His command at Zonchio also had clear backing from the senior admiral. The senior officer organised resources for the wider operation without displacing the commander directing the fighting. That division of responsibility spared Kemal the repeated political negotiation that constrained Grimani.
