Katsonis, Papanikolis, and Greek wartime endurance

Katsonis and Papanikolis served with skill in patrol and special-operations work despite losses and reported equipment weaknesses.

Notes

Katsonis was sunk by a German submarine chaser in September 1943, while Papanikolis survived the war and decommissioned in 1945. Papanikolis supported a New Zealand commando landing, part of a wider pattern in which Greek submariners proved particularly adept at difficult Special Operations Executive insertion missions. One report describes recurring fire-control and torpedo-system trouble, although no corroborating primary material was located. The record supports strong operational seamanship while leaving that technical claim unsettled.
