Kamchatka's wild gunfire and the Tangier cable

Kamchatka fires hundreds of ineffective shells at neutral shipping, while the squadron later severs Tangier's telegraph cable with an improperly raised anchor.

Notes

Kamchatka fired more than 300 shells at a Swedish merchant ship, a German trawler, and a French schooner without scoring a hit. The targeted vessels apparently did not even realize they were under fire. Later, as the fleet left Tangier, an improperly raised anchor severed the city's underwater telegraph cable. These episodes extend the readiness problem beyond the panic at Dogger Bank to gunnery, seamanship, and routine ship handling.
