Kaiser's survival obscures wooden warships' obsolescence

Lissa demonstrated that wooden ships could no longer match ironclads, even though the heavily armed Kaiser survived intense Italian attention.

Notes

Lissa exposed the limits of the mixed-fleet era because wooden ships, including ships of the line, could not meet ironclads on equal terms. Kaiser was heavily armed but remained one of the Austrian ships most at risk. As flagship of the second division, it drew sustained Italian attention and at one point was surrounded by ironclads. Tegetthoff had to lead his own armoured ships in to relieve it. Kaiser's dramatic survival was an exception within an obsolete type.
