Type C and the use of prefabrication to expand output

Prefabricating escort components outside the yard increased throughput without requiring rapid expansion of Japan's shipyard industry.

Notes

Type C ships carried odd numbers, with Type D carrying even numbers. Standard displacement below 800 tons put them at the small end of the series and firmly within the corvette approach to escort work. Japan lacked the large civilian industrial base available to Britain and the United States. Prefabrication allowed components to be built elsewhere before reaching the shipyard for final assembly. Flower-class corvettes addressed a related production problem by using expansion engines instead of turbines, making construction easier for civilian yards. Japan's prefabrication approach increased throughput at existing yards when rapid expansion of the shipyard industry was impractical.
