Mikura continued the transition from sloops built to full naval standards towards corvettes. A twin aft gun mounting and a single forward position replaced the earlier arrangement of separate gun positions. The layout freed deck space for 120 depth charges. Type 9 Model 93 sonar and Type 93 hydrophones remained part of the equipment, with radar fitted later. The ships had useful anti-submarine capabilities and received credit for some submarine kills, alongside significant losses.
