Jutland's losses and fleet recovery tell different stories

A ship-loss tally makes Jutland look murky, but fleet size, repair speed, and ships that never returned to service change the operational picture.

Notes

Jutland's immediate casualty figures tell a different story from the condition of the two fleets afterward. Britain lost more ships, but it had entered the battle with a much larger force. Damaged British ships returned to strength relatively quickly, whereas some German ships were never fully restored to service. Counting sinkings alone therefore obscures the different effects of the battle on sustained fleet power. This distinction helps explain why better communications could turn an existing British operational advantage into a clearer tactical result.
